Observations of the Diffuse FUV Background with FUSE
نویسنده
چکیده
We have used observations taken under the FUSE S405/S505 channel realignment program to explore the diffuse FUV (1000 1200 Å) radiation field. Of the 71 independent locations in that program, we have observed a diffuse signal in 32, ranging in brightness from 1600 photons cm sr s Å to a maximum of 2.9× 10 photons cm sr s Å in Orion. The FUSE data confirm that the diffuse FUV sky is patchy with regions of intense emission, usually near bright stars, but also with dark regions, even at low Galactic latitudes. We find a weak correlation between the FUV flux and the 100 μm ratio but with wide variations, perhaps due to differences in the local radiation field. Subject headings: ultraviolet: ISM, ISM: dust Based on observations made with the NASA-CNES-CSA Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. FUSE is operated for NASA by the Johns Hopkins University under NASA contract NAS5-32985.

Intense Diffuse Far-UV Emission from the Orion Nebula
We present spectra of the diffuse FUV (900 – 1200 Å) emission from a region near the Orion Nebula: the first high resolution spectra of the diffuse background radiation. These observations were made using serendipitous FUSE observations and were only possible because of the strength of the diffuse emission (≈ 3× 10 photons cm sr s Å) and the sensitivity of the FUSE instrument. Preliminary model...
متن کاملDiffuse Far-ultraviolet Observations of the Taurus Region
Diffuse far-ultraviolet (FUV: 1370–1670 Å) flux from the Taurus molecular cloud region has been observed with the SPEAR/FIMS imaging spectrograph. An FUV continuum map of the Taurus region, similar to the visual extinction maps, shows a distinct cloud core and halo region. The dense cloud core, where the visual extinction is Av > 1.5, obscures the background diffuse FUV radiation, while a scatt...
متن کاملSpectral Observations of Diffuse FUV Emission from the Hot Phase of the Interstellar Medium with DUVE ( the Diffuse Ultraviolet Experiment )
One of the keys to interpreting the character and evolution of interstellar matter in the galaxy is understanding the distribution of the low density hot (10 5 K − 10 6 K) phase of the interstellar medium (ISM). This phase is much more difficult to observe than the cooler high density components of the ISM because of its low density and lack of easily observable tracers. Because gas of this tem...
متن کاملFar Ultraviolet Study of the Hot White Dwarf in the Dwarf Nova WW Ceti
We present a synthetic spectral analysis of IUE archival and FUSE FUV spectra of the peculiar dwarf nova WW Ceti. During the quiescence of WW Ceti, a white dwarf with Twd ∼ 26, 000K ±1000K can account for the FUV flux and yields the proper distance. However, the best agreement with the observations is provided by a twotemperature white dwarf model with a cooler white dwarf at Twd = 25, 000K pro...
متن کاملThe boundary layer of VW Hyi in quiescence
In this letter, we suggest that the missing boundary layer luminosity of dwarf novae in quiescence is released mainly in the ultraviolet (UV) as the second component commonly identified in the far ultraviolet (FUV) as the ”accretion belt”. We present the well-studied SU UMa-type system VW Hyi in detail as a prototype for such a scenario. We consider detailed multiwavelength observations and in ...
